Presenter tips
Even though there is a microphone you still need to project your voice, otherwise it sounds like a quiet mumble or very dull.
Try not to mention your mistakes on air, most listeners do not notice and it draws attention to it. Keep driving on. Small mistakes seem blindingly obvious to you but the listener does not know what you are doing and the more apologies there are on air makes the overall impression is that we are making many mistakes.Try to avoid describing what you are doing, the listener does not need to hear this. They want to hear a show not you describing what you are technically doing. example " let me introduce you to my guest today as I get the mic into position and put their level up...."
This also goes for show formulas, if you are trying to keep people listening by having a competition later,or an exclusive, don't say "Coming up later is anexclusive, this is how I will keep you listening..." Yes give out teasers but say something like "to find out what the exclusive is stay tuned"Mention who's show is next and if you want to plug an event and you have no idea what sort of act they are then do not say "On so and so date that band are playing, I have never heard of them but they must be good" Instead say "for further information go to..." Better than that is to find out yourself first.
Try not to talk after every track as it disrupts the flow of the show. There are only a very small number of shows that this works, most of the time it sounds like you are talking because you think that you should. Let 2 or 3 tracks play before speaking. The exception to this is to say Hello after the first track or it sounds like a mix tape!Do not use words like obviously, for example "that track was obviously by xyz..." Just because it is obvious to you and your friends most of the music we will play is not mainstream and it is patronising to the listener who is enjoying the music but the artists are new to them. Include people don't exclude them. Many people have heard the song but do not know the title, the artist and whose backing band they used to be in, but they might be able to whistle the tune!
Most of this revolves around preparation of shows, the best shows are those that the presenters have picked out their music beforehand and thought about what they are going to say. Before you speak on air think through what you are about to say, does it make sense, have you checked that he information you are presenting is true or have you just made it up?DON’T MISS OUT!
